What this does, plainly

A GIF is a short run of frames in one file. This tool turns it into a single still picture, and the still it makes is the first frame. It does not extract every frame, build a sheet or pick a frame from the middle. If that is what you need, a video or animation editor is the right place. If you want a clean still of a logo, a sticker or a graphic that happens to be a GIF, this is the quick way.

What goes wrong with GIF

  • Only 256 colours. A GIF can use at most 256 colours per frame, so photographs look speckled. A PNG made from it keeps that look; it cannot add colours back.
  • Rough transparency. GIF transparency is on or off for each pixel, with no soft edge. A PNG made from it keeps the same hard edge, which can look jagged on a coloured page. A cut-out redone with the background remover has smooth edges.
  • A still from an animation. The first frame of some animations is only part of the picture, with the rest drawn over it in later frames. If your still looks incomplete, that is why.
  • Tiny sizes. GIFs are often small. If you need to print the PNG, check its pixel size first.

The settings, for this conversion

  • PNG. Transparency is kept, with the resolution you set stamped in (300 dpi to start).
  • JPG instead. Choose JPG under Save as for a photo-style GIF. Quality and a fill colour for the clear areas appear, since a JPG cannot be transparent.

How to do it

  1. Drop the GIF, or choose it.
  2. Keep PNG selected for a still with transparency, or pick another format.
  3. Read the note about the first frame, check the size, and download.

Open the picture here, choose how to save it, and download. Everything happens in this page: the picture is read and rewritten by your browser, with no upload and no account. You can confirm that on the Network tab of your browser's developer tools.

One picture, or a whole folder

Converting one picture at a time is free, with no watermark and no limit. If you load several, you can pick any of them to preview and save on its own. Pro converts every loaded picture in one go and saves them as one ZIP (up to 30 at a time) with a short report of what was made.

Other conversions

The same tool opens with a different pair on each page, and any picture works on any page.

Questions

Does it convert every frame of the GIF?

No. Only the first frame is converted. The page puts a note on the result so you are not surprised.

Can I choose a different frame?

Not here. Use an animation or video editor to pull out the frame you want, then convert that.

Will the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG. A GIF's transparency has hard edges, and they stay hard.

Why does the still look incomplete?

Many animations draw only what changes in each frame. Frame one of those can be a partial picture. This tool shows what the browser decodes as frame one.

Can I convert many pictures at once?

You can load up to 30 pictures and look at each one, but saving them one by one is free and saving them all at once is part of Pro: one ZIP with every converted file and a short report. Your first batch on a device is free to try.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The picture is opened and rewritten by your browser, in this page, and the page has no code that sends a file anywhere. The site counts that a tool was used and that a file of a certain type was saved, never the picture or its name.
