Turn a photo into a coloring page

One clear subject, reasonably large in the frame, on a plain or blurred background: a pet, a car, a building, a flower, a portrait. Busy scenes make busy pages, because the tool draws what is really there. If the background is cluttered, clear it first with the background remover (it works best on plain backdrops), then come back.

Strong texture, like tabby stripes or snow in sunlight, contains real edges. Switch the style to Clean shapes, which draws the shapes in the picture instead of every edge. Raising Ignore texture and lowering Detail also help.

No. A sketch filter keeps shading and tone. This draws black lines on white with no shading and no grey tone, so there are areas to colour and a printer prints clean black. That is what a colouring page needs. The page you download is drawn at the printer's resolution, so the lines come out solid. The one exception is the Grayscale style, which keeps soft grey shading on purpose, for grayscale coloring.

A one-page PDF the exact size of a Letter or A4 sheet, with the drawing centred inside a half-inch margin; a PNG of the same page at 300 dpi is one click away. In the Drawn style the lines are drawn at print size, not enlarged, so they stay crisp. Print the PDF at 100% (or "actual size") and it comes out exactly the page size. Wide images get a landscape page automatically, and the Printed page view shows the sheet before you print.

Yes. Pick Grayscale under Style and the photo becomes soft grey shading to colour over, usually with coloured pencils, so the light and shadow are already on the page. There are three looks under Look: Pale (the lightest, so light colours stay clean), Medium (a good place to start) and Deep (darker shadows and stronger texture). The texture of fur, feathers or wood stays in the shading, and the darkest parts are lightened so colour still shows over them. The printable PDF, the page PNG and the picture-only PNG work as they do for line art; there is no SVG, because shading has no lines to write. For a whole book of them, the coloring book maker has the same style.

Yes. When a page has big black areas, a Solid areas choice appears under Line weight: Keep black prints them as they are, Outline to colour in turns each big black shape into a closed line with a white inside. Thin lines and small details (eyes, a pupil) are left alone. It starts on Outline when most of the ink in the picture is big black shapes, as with script lettering, a silhouette or a logo, and on Keep black when the solid parts are small details; you can switch either way and the page redraws in a moment. The PNG, the printable page and PDF, the SVG and the batch all follow your choice. Detailed lines does not have this choice.

Yes to both. Crop (above the picture) cuts the part you want from your original photo, at full detail, and draws the page again from it: use it when the subject is small or the background is busy. Simple under How much to draw keeps the big shapes and the faces and drops the small marks, with a heavier line, for little hands; Detailed keeps more.

Yes. Press Edit lines above the picture. The pen draws at the page's own line width, the eraser rubs lines out, and the straight line tool draws a clean line between two points (hold Shift to keep it level). Undo and redo work with the buttons or Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z. The edits go into the printable page, the PNG and the SVG, where erased lines are removed rather than painted over in white.

The pages are yours, but the rights in the original photo still apply. Use your own photos, or ones whose licence allows derivative works. Tracing someone else's photo doesn't make it yours.

Not in the default mode. In On this device, your browser decodes the image, and the drawing model and the shape finder both run on this page. The first time you use the Drawn style, your browser downloads the model from this site (about 12 to 15 MB, shown as one progress bar) and keeps it for next time; your photo is never sent anywhere. Nothing leaves this computer, which also means family photos stay family photos.

The one exception is the optional Cloud AI redraw mode. If you switch to it, tick the consent box and press its button, that one photo is sent to our server and to Cloudflare Workers AI to be redrawn (details in the Cloud mode question at the end of this list). Leave the switch on On this device and nothing is uploaded.

Two drawing styles from the same line-drawing model family, picked under Line style once a photo is drawn. Fine pencil is the default: thin lines and small details, and the better choice for faces and portraits. Bold outline draws longer, bolder outlines with less detail. It suits pets (a cat on a dark background), pumpkins, toys and objects, and it leaves out small facial features such as eyes and lips on a person. On a busy background it can leave short stray lines; clear the background first with the background remover or tidy them with Edit lines. Bold outline is a second download of about 8 MB the first time you pick it; your browser keeps it, and it runs on your device like everything else here. Very dark photos (more than half the picture almost black) are brightened before they are drawn, in either style.

Informative Drawings, by Caroline Chan, Fredo Durand and Phillip Isola (CVPR 2022), released under the MIT licence. Fine pencil uses its "anime_style" weights and Bold outline its "contour_style" weights; the network is the same. Both are converted to ONNX with the weights stored as float16 and run in your browser; nothing else is changed (licence and notice).

Cloud mode is an optional second way to make the page. Instead of tracing your photo on this computer, an AI model (FLUX.2 klein, run by Cloudflare Workers AI) redraws it as line art. It is off by default and starts only when you switch to it, tick the consent box and press the button. Then your browser makes a smaller copy of the photo with the camera data (such as the location) removed and sends it to our server, which passes it to Cloudflare, Inc. (USA) to be redrawn; the drawing comes back to your browser. We do not keep the photo or the result, and Cloudflare says it does not train on content processed by Workers AI.
