Name tracing worksheet maker: free printable practice sheet

Type a name and print a practice sheet: the name as a model, then dashed, dotted or faded copies to trace on handwriting lines, then empty lines to write it alone. A PDF or PNG made in your browser. Free, nothing uploaded.

Updated : Pressing the heading of a Pro section in the settings, such as A list of names, opened the Pro window; it now opens the section. What's new

A name to copy, trace and write

The sheet is built from the real outlines of the font you choose, so any name works: short, long, with accents, or two words. The model row shows the name solid, the next rows show it as a dashed or dotted outline (or faded letters) with a dot at the top of each letter to start from, and the rest of the page is blank handwriting lines.

What you can change

  • Line height: 0.5 in (13 mm), 0.75 in (19 mm), 1 in (25 mm), 1.25 in (32 mm), 1.5 in (38 mm), measured from the top line to the baseline.
  • Style: dashed outline, dotted outline or faded letters. The model row, the start dots and the guide lines can be switched off.
  • Rows: how many rows to trace and how many empty lines, as many as the page holds at that height.
  • Font, case and paper: 8 fonts, as typed, upper or lower case, Letter or A4.

How to use it

  1. Type the name and choose a line height that suits the writer: taller for the youngest.
  2. Choose a font. Comic Neue Bold and Patrick Hand have the plainest letters.
  3. Download the PDF and print it at 100%, then check the line height with a ruler.

A class list works too: with Pro, paste the names one to a line and save one ZIP with a sheet for each child.

What it does not do

  • It does not show stroke order or arrows. The start dots only mark where to begin.
  • A character the chosen font has no letter for is left out, and the page tells you which.

Fonts and licences

These pages bundle 8 fonts. Each one is used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, unchanged: the font file on this site is the file from the Google Fonts repository (commit 47d54ca1), with the licence text that goes with it next to it. A font is downloaded only when you choose it, and your browser keeps it.

Questions

How is the sheet laid out?

Every row has a top line, a dashed middle line at the height of the small letters, and a heavier baseline, with room under it for letters that hang below. The first row is the name in solid letters as the model. The next rows are the name to trace, as a dashed outline, a dotted outline or faded letters, and the rows after that are empty lines to write the name alone. You choose how many of each; if the page cannot hold them all at the line height you chose, it says how many fit and shows that many.

How tall are the letters?

You choose the distance from the top line to the baseline: 0.5 in (13 mm), 0.75 in (19 mm), 1 in (25 mm), 1.25 in (32 mm), 1.5 in (38 mm). The sheet shows exactly that distance, so what you pick is what is printed (print at 100%). A name too wide for the line is made smaller to fit, and the result line says so and gives the new height.

What are the green dots?

A dot at the top of each letter marks a place to start. It is not the stroke order: the fonts carry no information about which way a letter is drawn, so the sheet cannot teach that. Joined script letters get one dot for the whole joined piece. The dots can be switched off.

Which font is best for tracing?

Comic Neue Bold and Patrick Hand are plain, single-storey letters with strokes wide enough to trace inside. Comic Neue Bold draws a and g in one storey, the way young children are usually taught to write them. The round display fonts also work, and the script font gives a joined-up sheet.

Which letters can it draw?

Every one of the 8 fonts draws A to Z, a to z, digits, the usual punctuation and the accented letters of the Latin-1 block (é, ñ, ü, ç, ø and the rest of À to ÿ). Characters beyond that, such as Polish, Czech, Turkish, Greek or Cyrillic letters, symbols and emoji, are drawn only where the font has them. Where it does not, the character is left out of the drawing and the page names it under the preview, so you can pick another font. Nothing is swapped for a different character, except that a missing capital or small letter is drawn as the other case, and the page says so. Names are limited to 40 characters. Bungee has capitals only, so its lower case letters come out as capitals.

How do I print it at the right size?

The PDF page is exactly the paper size you chose, so print it at 100%, or "actual size", with "fit to page" off. Then the line height printed is the one you chose. The PNG is 300 dpi for the same paper.

Is the name uploaded?

No. The font is downloaded to your browser, and the name is typed, drawn and saved on your own device. The site counts that a page was used and that a file was saved (as a file type), never the name, and it has no way to read what you typed.

Can I sell what I make with these fonts?

The fonts are under the SIL Open Font License, which allows using them in your own work, including things you sell, and does not allow selling the font files by themselves. The licence text for each font is linked at the bottom of the page. This is the licence as written, not legal advice; read it if your plans are unusual.

Can I make tracing worksheets for a whole class or a list?

One name at a time, with every font and option, is free. With Pro you can paste a list, one name to a line, up to 50 names, and get one ZIP with a PDF or PNG for each and a short report (names-report.txt) that lists every name, the settings used and any character the font could not draw. Every name uses the font and settings on the page. A name past the 50th is listed in the report, not dropped quietly.

What does it not do?

It does not teach stroke order or draw arrows for how to form a letter, it does not check handwriting, and it is not a handwriting course. It makes the practice sheet.
