From repeat tile to a cutting plan

A seamless digital image does not tell you how much printed fabric to buy. This planner starts every panel a whole number of repeats from the first one, across and down, so each panel shows the same motif in the same place. It fits as many matching panels across the usable width as it can, then stacks rows down the roll.

What the length includes

The minimum length runs from the first aligned panel to the last cut edge. The buying figure adds one extra vertical repeat, because the roll rarely starts exactly at the motif you want. Neither includes shrinkage, flaws or a straightening cut: add those for your fabric. Enter seam and hem allowances in the cut sizes, not afterwards.

Worked example

For 450 × 600 mm panels, a 150 × 200 mm straight repeat and 1400 mm usable width, three panels fit across (a new panel every 450 mm). Six panels take two rows: 1.20 m minimum length, and 1.40 m (1.54 yd) to buy with the extra repeat. In inches, 18 × 24 in panels on 54 in fabric with a 6 × 8 in repeat also fit three across, with no width wasted.
