Text box won't move or resize in Design Space? Check the 10.4 fix

Design Space 10.4 addresses slow text editing and stuck text boxes. Check the installed version, text state and Curve or Sticker panel before rebuilding a project.

Cricut says Design Space for Desktop 10.4 fixes slow, unresponsive text editing and text boxes that could not be moved or resized. Its 21 September 2026 release notes also name a narrower fix for text that had both Curve and Sticker applied while the Sticker panel was open. If this matches your project, check the desktop app version first. The release note identifies a software fix; it does not prove that every stuck text object has the same cause.

This guide separates the update from ordinary text-box behaviour and from artwork that is no longer editable text. It is for Design Space on Windows or Mac. Cricut publishes mobile release notes separately, so the 10.4 claim should not be applied to an iPad or Android version.

What exactly did version 10.4 fix?

In the dated desktop release notes, Cricut names two related defects: text editing could become slow or unresponsive, with boxes that could not be moved or resized; and text using Curve and Sticker could fail to move while the Sticker panel remained open. These are behaviour fixes, not a new file format, a machine firmware update or a change to how SVG outlines work.

The wording matters. Cricut does not say that all text lag has been eliminated, that existing projects will be repaired automatically, or that every font behaves identically. Use a small copy of the affected project to test the reported fix before changing a production file.

How do you check the installed version?

  1. Save a copy of the project if it will still save. Keep the original until you have verified the fix.
  2. In the desktop app, open the account menu at the top right, then Settings.
  3. Under General, find About Design Space. Cricut says this area shows the installed version and offers pending updates.
  4. If the version is older than 10.4, install the offered update, let the app restart and reopen the copied project.
  5. Try moving and resizing one ordinary text box, then the original affected text. Record whether both behave the same.

Cricut's settings guide describes the current menu path. If you are using Beta, note that separately when reporting a problem; the regular desktop release notes alone do not establish the behaviour of a Beta build.

Is the object still editable text?

Select it in the Layers panel and inspect what Design Space shows. A text object can be edited by double-clicking it or by using Edit Text from its context menu. Clicking outside the box exits Edit mode; selecting its boundary lets you position it. These are different states, and typing will not work while the object is only selected for moving.

Cricut's text guide distinguishes two similar controls. Corner handles change the size of the text; the middle rectangular handles change the width or height of the text box and can wrap the words. If a middle handle appears to change the line break rather than the letter size, the control is doing its documented job. Use the corner handle or the font-size field for larger letters.

If the layer is an uploaded SVG, its letters may already be vector outlines. If it was welded or flattened, Cricut says curved text no longer remains editable as text. Return to the source project or an editable copy to change wording or font. Updating Design Space cannot reconstruct the original text characters from arbitrary outlines.

What if Curve and Sticker are involved?

  1. On a copy, close the Sticker panel and select the text again in Layers.
  2. Check whether it moves with the panel closed and whether the app is on desktop 10.4 or newer.
  3. For curved text, check that it is a single line. Cricut says the Curve control is disabled for a multiline text box; split the lines into separate boxes if a curved line is needed.
  4. Check the text boundary and the mat preview after any change. A sticker's printable layer, offset and cut contour must still form the intended result.

Do not flatten a text design merely to make it movable. Flatten changes the editing and cutting workflow. For an unwanted pale edge on a printed sticker, the Print Then Cut border guide addresses bleed, offset and calibration; that is a different problem from a frozen text box.

What if text is still slow after updating?

Test in a new project with a short word in a standard font. If the new word responds but one existing file does not, narrow the investigation to that project: make a copy, isolate the affected layer, and note whether a particular font, Curve or Sticker step triggers the slowdown. If both new and old projects lag, record the installed version, operating system and whether the app is regular or Beta.

Cricut's settings guide offers Help → Report a Bug with a description and screenshot. A minimal reproduction is more useful than a broad claim that text is broken: describe the exact click sequence, the version, and whether the box can be selected in Layers. Avoid deleting the app cache as a first response to text lag. Cricut's cache-clearing guide targets a desktop app that fails to load or shows a blank white screen, a different symptom.

When should you prepare text outside Design Space?

For a finished logo or repeated vinyl label whose wording will not change, drawing text in another vector editor and converting it to paths can make the font appearance portable. Keep an editable original with the live text and font information. When the design reaches Design Space as an SVG, its vectors become cut lines, so inspect letter counters, spacing, layer operations and the physical size before cutting. For pen or foil lettering, outlined type does not become a single centre line. The single-line drawing guide explains the separate geometry needed. What should you check before cutting?

  • The desktop version is 10.4 or newer if you are relying on Cricut's September fix.
  • The affected layer is still text if you need to edit its characters.
  • Corner handles, middle handles and Edit mode are being used for their different jobs.
  • Curve and Sticker panels no longer prevent the copied design from moving.
  • The final mat preview still shows the intended size, operation and placement.

The shortest path is version, object type, then a small reproduction. That preserves your original project and gives Cricut a useful report if the documented fix does not resolve your case.
