How to make a coloring book from your own photos

Which photos make good coloring pages?

The ones with a clear outline: a pet lying on a plain floor, a child's favourite toy, the family car, a house against the sky, a flower up close. Line art is found from edges, so everything with an edge becomes a line. A plain background gives a clean page; a cluttered kitchen gives a page full of cupboard doors.

• Crop in close to the subject before you start.
• Clear a plain background with the background remover.
• Use the original photo, not a screenshot or a thumbnail.

How do you make the book, step by step?

1. Drop all the pictures into the coloring book maker. Photos are turned into line art; pictures that are already drawings are kept as they are.
2. Put the pages in order with the arrows, and remove any that did not come out well.
3. Adjust Detail and Ignore texture if pages are too busy or too sparse. The same settings apply to every page, so the book stays consistent.
4. Add a title, and choose page numbers, blank backs and the “this book belongs to” line.
5. Choose the page size, Letter, A4 or a square book, and the margin.
6. Download the PDF. A book of up to 12 pictures is free; Pro takes up to 100.

How should you print it?

• Print at 100% (“actual size”), not “fit to page”, so the margins stay even.
• For markers, turn on blank backs and print single-sided, or use thicker paper. Markers soak through ordinary copy paper.
• For crayons and pencils, blank backs are not needed; print double-sided to save paper.
• Bind it with staples down the side, a ring binder, or a local print shop's comb binding.

Can you sell a coloring book you make?

The line art the tool makes is yours to use. Whether you can sell the book depends on what you started from: your own photos, yes; other people's photos, characters or brands, only with their permission. If you publish through a print-on-demand service, set its current trim size and margins in the maker, and check that service's rules for interior files before you upload.
