If an xTool machine stopped connecting immediately after firmware changed, record the exact model, firmware number and software version before trying another cable. xTool's support notice, updated 16 September 2026, describes a communication-protocol compatibility issue affecting specified F1-series, P2S and M1 Ultra firmware when used with xTool Creative Space, LightBurn or older Studio releases. A connection error alone does not prove this is your cause; the version combination does.
This is a documentation-based decision guide, not a report of machine testing. Do not downgrade a machine merely because its connection failed. First separate a version mismatch from a USB, network or device-selection problem, then follow the exact model-specific instructions from xTool if a downgrade is warranted.
Which machines and software does the notice name?
xTool's current troubleshooting notice names F1, F1 Lite, F1 Ultra, P2S and M1 Ultra. It identifies xTool Creative Space on desktop or mobile, LightBurn, and xTool Studio version 1.6 and below as affected software. It also lists the firmware thresholds below. The notice's later wording says “below 1.6” while its affected-software list says “1.6 and below”; because those phrasings differ, check the exact installed build rather than treating 1.6 as a safe boundary.
- F1: firmware 40.51.020.04 or later.
- F1 Lite: 40.55.020.04 or later.
- F1 Ultra Class 4: 40.52.016.05 or later; Class 1: 40.53.007.05 or later. Do not swap instructions between these variants.
- M1 Ultra: 40.41.017 or later.
- P2S: 40.22.011 or later.
These are the combinations in xTool's September support document, not a universal list of laser incompatibilities. LightBurn's device-specific troubleshooting page also warns that recent firmware removed LightBurn support from several xTool devices. Its broader list should not be used to assume the same recovery procedure applies to a model absent from xTool's notice.
Run a five-minute version check before changing firmware
- Write down the exact machine name. Include F1 Ultra Class 1 versus Class 4 where relevant. Photograph the machine label if the software shows only a shortened name.
- Record the firmware version shown by the device or its supported settings screen. Compare all number groups with xTool's threshold for that model. Do not infer the installed firmware from when you clicked Update; an interrupted or misleading completion screen can leave a different version.
- Record the software and build. Distinguish xTool Studio from Creative Space, its mobile app, and LightBurn. An SVG opening problem is not the same symptom as the editor failing to see the device.
- Confirm the failure began after that firmware change. If it predates the update, or the model is outside the list, investigate the editor's ordinary connection guidance instead of assuming this notice explains it.
- Save your project and settings. Keep an untouched source file before changing applications or firmware. Check whether a newer project format can be opened in an older Studio version if you plan to move between versions.
A useful support note reads: “P2S, firmware 40.22.011, LightBurn version [your build], worked by USB before the update, now not detected by USB; xTool Studio [your build] does or does not connect.” That tells support far more than “my laser is offline.” It also prevents a normal Wi-Fi connection issue from being mistaken for the firmware mismatch.
Choose the recovery path that matches your workflow
If you can use a current, supported xTool Studio build, confirm its installed version and the device's supported connection method through xTool's update instructions. The September notice does not promise that updating Studio restores every LightBurn or XCS feature. Test the connection and a saved job preview before committing to a production run.
If your workflow depends on software named as incompatible, xTool documents a firmware downgrade path. Use the model-specific guide linked from its notice, not firmware intended for a similar-looking machine. xTool says the downgrade entry requires Studio newer than 1.4 and a USB data cable; Wi-Fi or IP connection cannot perform that downgrade. Those are prerequisites, not a recommendation for everyone to downgrade. Read the complete official guide, keep stable power, and contact xTool support if the model, firmware variant or available controls do not match.
For M1 Ultra, the notice gives a detailed example in Studio's Settings → Device → Firmware Management. Do not treat that example's target version as the target for an F1 or P2S. After any official downgrade, xTool says to unplug and reconnect USB and restart Studio before checking the firmware number again. If a downgrade stops or reports an error, avoid repeated blind attempts; use the device-specific support path.
What if this is an artwork problem instead?
A device that connects but freezes while importing a large SVG belongs in a different diagnosis. The Studio 1.9 import guide explains object-count and auto-merge changes; the nesting guide addresses placement after a file opens. Neither repairs a firmware connection. Use the free browser-local SVG checker only to inspect file structure; it cannot inspect firmware or connect to your laser.
If you need a fresh outline from a PNG or JPG after the connection issue is resolved, Makerfern's image-to-vector tool prepares an SVG locally in the browser. SVG preview and export are free; DXF and batch exports require Pro. File preparation does not establish machine compatibility or safe laser parameters. The Makerfern overview explains where the browser workflow ends.
Stop at a verified connection
The decisive check is the exact model plus firmware and editor versions. If they match the notice, choose a supported editor or follow xTool's official model-specific recovery guide. If they do not, troubleshoot the actual connection method and contact support with the version record. Reconnect, inspect the job preview and follow your machine's framing procedure before processing material.
